Rooftops, gardens and riverside terraces: our pick of the capital's best spots to say "I do" in the open air.

London might be famous for its grand hotels, but some of the city's most memorable weddings happen outdoors. Here is what to look for when choosing an open-air venue, and our favourite types of space.

1. Walled gardens

Hidden behind high brick walls, the capital's walled gardens feel miles from the traffic. Look for venues with a covered terrace so the celebration can move inside if it rains.

2. Rooftop terraces

Nothing beats sunset cocktails with the skyline behind you. Check the venue's capacity for the terrace itself, because it is often much smaller than the room below.

3. Riverside venues

A Thames-side ceremony gives you boats drifting past and beautiful light on the water. Ask about noise from river traffic during the vows.

Always have a Plan B

Every outdoor venue should have a wet-weather option you would be just as happy with. Visit it, photograph it, and decide the cut-off time for moving inside.

And of course… HAPPY PLANNING!!!
